Coping stone is a stone placed at the top of the wall to serve as a cover for the wall. Cut roughly and spaced irregularly, the coping stones create a rustic appearance. The type of stone coping used on walls varies from area to area and often from wall to wall. They are available in an assortment of shapes, sizes and colors.
Types of Stone Coping
Difference in patterns of coping provide the most obvious characteristics of different walling styles.
- Upright Coping: This is the most common form of coping. Stones are placed in an upright position.
- Random Coping: Stones of different sizes are placed randomly.
- Level Top Coping: Stones are held more tightly and great attention is placed on producing a level and even finish.
- Locked Top Coping: Irregular stones are trimmed and held tightly. The left over places are filled with pinnings.
- Buck and Doe Coping: Buck-and-doe coping, sometimes known as 'cock-and-hen', alternates tall (buck) and short (doe) stones to give a castellated effect.
- Granite Coping: These are strong and perfect for coping. This beautiful coping provides a rich look while adding a safe, non slip surface.

- Marble Coping: They are widely used for coping because of their unique beauty.
- Limestone Coping: They perform versatile applications. They can be intricately carved and used for coping in a number of ways.
