Stepping Stones

Stepping stones are a great addition to any home's garden or backyard décor. They are commonly used in walkway areas and are available in an assortment of shapes, sizes and designs. Multitude of materials can be used as stepping stones.

Stepping stone paths are decorative and easy to install. The stones are usually available in round and square shapes. They can also be irregularly shaped.

Installation of Stepping Stones

• Plan a path.
• Lay stones out along the planned path. The stones should be appropriate size for walking.
• Trace their shape and mark their position.
• Remove the grass and dig on the marked position.
• Place the stones and add builder's sand to the hole to level them. This will also hold the stones in place.
• The stones will eventually settle, so add sand until they sit slightly above the surface.
• Add mulch around the stones.
• This gives way to a beautiful walkway.

Types of Stones Used as Stepping Stones

• Granite Stepping Stones: The most commonly used colors of granite includes black, red, maroon, etc. They make beautiful pathways.
• Limestone Stepping Stones: Limestone steps are prone to weather conditions and are widely used as stepping stones.
• Sandstone Stepping Stones: They give a rugged natural look and are used for making the most exclusive walkway. The colors commonly used are Agra red, chocolate, almond crème, etc.
• Marble Stepping Stones: Owing to immense natural beauty of marble, these steps offer a graceful walkway enhancing the beauty of the surroundings. The most common shades are white, red, black, mottled and banded gray, pink and green.
