Brines
Brines
are water saturated or rather nearly saturated with salt. It is
basically used to preserve vegetables, fish, and meat. It was more
popular in past than now.
Few examples of Brine lakes are the Dead Sea and the Great Salt Lake
in Utah. They are developed as a result of high evaporation rates in a
desert climate and lack of an outlet to the ocean. The salt in these
water bodies comes from the minerals washed out of the surrounding
watershed or then from a geologically old, previous connection to the
ocean.
Man-made brine ponds are a source of commercial table salt. They are
located along an ocean shore. The salts are obtained by evaporating
and purifying seawater. Commercial table salt is also obtained by way
of a salt mine.
In England, Droitwich Spa, a town, is famous for the abundance of
saturated brine.
