Sillimanite:
SillimaniteResults: In the showings
sillimanite ranges are 11.0-17.3 % for Rive, 6.0-11.7 % for
SIL4, and 2.5-9.0 % for SIL5. Potential of considerable
resources of sillimanite in the Basillim
LineamentMineralization: In the Rive showing sillimanite is in
crystals up to 3 cm disseminated in quartz-feldspar gneiss;
in the SIL4 showing, translucent fibrolite in 1-3 mm nodules
in quartz-feldspar gneiss; and in the SIL5 showing, 2-4 cm
translucent crystals in mm to cm bands in
quartz-feldspar-magnetite gneiss. The gneiss are in bands up to
several meters wide. Three sillimanite showings Rive, SIL4 &
SIL5 occur in a 2 x 8 km stratigraphic mag low called Basillim
Lineament.

Summary:
1969 Discovery of a sillimanite showing later called Rive
showing, no sampling (Quebec Natural Resources Ministry DP-106
& RP-580). 2000-2001 Prospecting, mapping, Rive showing
located, SIL4 & SIL5 showings discovered, grab sampling,
petrographic studies, chemical and X ray analysis. Other
comments: Sillimanite is used in refractories. Sillimanite is
sold as raw concentrate and also as added value products such
as refined sillimanite, calcined sillimanite or mullite and
by-products. Possible co-products are quartz, feldspar,
biotite, muscovite, etc. Iron, steel, aluminium, cement,
ceramic and glass industries use sillimanite refractories.
China
and India are the largest producers of sillimanite but
production is limited and mostly consumed by their domestic
markets. Competitive refractories to sillimanite are synthetic
mullite, superduty fire clays, high alumina materials and
sillimanites polymorphs andalusite and kyanite. In North
America there is no commercial production of sillimanite.
